Publishers Newswire (PNW), an online news outlet covering books, music, indie film, and software that has been operating since 2004, published its semi-annual "Books to Bookmark" list for the third quarter of 2026 on September 25, naming ten titles from small North American publishers. The list is explicitly intended to draw attention to books that, in PNW's view, are routinely passed over because they do not originate from major traditional New York publishing houses.

"This quarter we saw a great mix of fiction, family and parenting, memoirs, and financial topics," said PNW editor and publisher Christopher Laird Simmons, who has worked in publishing since the late 1970s and is also CEO of the parent company Neotrope. "Even with the economic struggles this year, books continue to be one of the best forms of affordable entertainment."

Among the memoir titles, Neal Winsomer's Calling Out the Shadows: A Father's Stand Against the Current documents a decade of contested co-parenting drawn from 999 documented hours of writing. In a different register, Mohsen Rifaat's Spaces Between the Nile and the True North: Negotiating Egyptian-Canadian Cultural Fusion follows his journey from British-occupied and revolutionary Egypt to Canada, illustrated with his own watercolors, sketches, photographs, and personal memorabilia.

The list also includes two works oriented around children and parenting. Ani Lalazarian's debut picture book, Into the Heart of the Forest: A Journey to Love, was shaped by her 2020 career change from the fashion world to becoming an energy healer, breathwork facilitator, and spiritual guide; the illustrated adventure is aimed at helping children access emotional resilience and nervous system awareness. Author, teacher, and coach Shaffa's The Feeling You Cannot Admit addresses a specific, targeted feeling some parents carry toward a particular child — one that, according to the author, has until now remained largely unspoken. The book does not name the feeling for the reader but instead provides a psychological, scientific, and spiritual framework for readers to name their own experience.

On the non-fiction side, advertising professional Mark Robinson's coffee table book Pitch Black: The Best Black Ads of the Past 50+ Years chronicles how advertising created by and for Black Americans functioned as a tool during the Civil Rights movement. In fiction, author, pilot, and flight instructor David Brandon's Rings of Saturn: Enemy Within is a military science fiction novel drawing on theories surrounding secret space programs, blended with psychological tension, romance, and speculative aerospace technology. Dr. Martin W. B. Jarvis OAM CM, Ph.D.'s historical novel The Other Bach: The Mysterious Magdalena Wilcke centers on Anna Magdalena Wilcke, Johann Sebastian Bach's second wife, and draws on Jarvis's background in eighteenth-century music manuscripts and forensic document analysis.
